For years, I watched talented graduates struggle. They were smart, passionate, and ready to work. But when they applied for crime scene investigator positions, they kept hearing the same frustrating response:

"You don’t have enough field experience."

Traditional academic programs weren’t preparing students for the realities of the job — the technical demands, the emotional challenges, and the confidence to perform under pressure.

I wanted to change that.

So, I created a training program that goes beyond theory. I built a space where students learn what the job requires and practice those skills in hands-on, realistic settings.

Lessons from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation

March 17, 2025|career tips, education, training

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently concluded a comprehensive review of cases handled by former forensic scientist Yvonne "Missy" Woods. The results are staggering: over 1,000 cases have been identified as impacted by Woods' misconduct during her nearly 30-year career.

Key Findings:

Woods intentionally omitted material facts in official criminal justice records

She tampered with DNA testing results by omitting some results

Her actions violated CBI's Code of Conduct and laboratory policies

Implications for the Forensic Science Field

This case highlights critical issues that we, as forensic science educators and practitioners, must address:

Quality Control: The need for robust quality control measures in forensic laboratories is paramount.

Ethical Training: We must emphasize the importance of ethical conduct in our training programs.

Oversight: Independent audits and regular peer reviews should be standard practice in forensic labs.

Our Commitment to Excellence

In each of our hands-on training programs, we are redoubling our efforts to ensure that our students are not only technically proficient but also deeply committed to ethical practices. We are:

Updating our curriculum to include more lecture-based ethical training

Incorporating case studies like the CBI incident to illustrate the real-world consequences of misconduct

The forensic science community must learn from this incident. As we train the next generation of forensic professionals, we must instill in them not only technical skills but also a deep sense of responsibility and integrity.

Our academy remains committed to upholding the highest standards in forensic science education. We believe that by addressing these challenges head-on, we help students realize the importance of being ethical and practicing ethical behaviors.
